OUR PROGRAMS
THE 4-YEAR DOCTOR OF DENTAL MEDICINE (D.M.D.) COURSE
The 4-year DMD program prepares students to provide basic health promotion and disease prevention, diagnose and develop treatment plans, analyze complex medical and dental cases, and achieve competency in all areas defined for general practitioners.
The competency-based curriculum also reflects the school’s commitment to supporting the development of professionalism, life-long learning, and synthesis of clinical and biomedical science concepts.
An essential part of the training of students at James Cook School of Medicine Dental Medicine is to learn and practice clinical concepts that involve administering anesthesia, dental hygiene and cleaning as well as other facets of dental examination and care.
In order to facilitate this training, part of the educational experience at JCSM School of Dental Medicine requires students to serve as patients for other students.
THE 6-YEAR DOCTOR OF DENTAL MEDICINE (D.M.D.) COURSE
The 6-Year DMD Course is comprised of a 2-year Pre-Dental Medicine studies and a 4-year DMD Course.
This is a course of study intended to prepare students for a Doctor of Dental Medicine (DMD) program.
This is recommended by the Admission Council if In the case where the prospective student doesn't have the sufficient amount of credit hours to proceed to the DMD course, or a student who have not attained his/her first degree, or probably a student who didn't take the appropriate majors in college.
In the 6-Year DMD Program, the 4-Year Dental Medicine Course comes directly after the Pre-Dental Medicine Course. Upon a completion of the Pre-Dental Medicine Course, the Admission Council access the students readiness to enroll into the DMD program.
Once the student has met all Admission Requirements he/she is promoted to the DMD years.
THE 7-YEAR DOCTOR OF DENTAL MEDICINE/DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY (D.M.D./Ph.D.)
The 7-year D.M.D. / Ph.D. combined degree program is available for Dental students.
The DMD portion follows the conventional curriculum but is spread out over a longer period to allow ample time for research.
The PhD portion is in Interdisciplinary Studies. Didactic instruction, therefore, is the responsibility of multiple units, typically the Department of Oral Immunology and Infectious Diseases; and Departments of Biochemistry; Microbiology and Immunology; and Anatomy.
While Ph.D. research topics are broad, most candidates will rely on the mentorship of faculty from the Department of Immunology and Infectious Diseases or the Department of Molecular and Craniofacial Biology
THE 4-YEAR DOCTOR OF DENTAL MEDICINE/MASTER OF PUBLIC HEALTH (D.M.D./MPH) COURSE
The James Cook School of Medicine DMD/MPH program is unique in several ways.
Our program integrates significant components of the MPH coursework into the DMD curriculum which allow students run the program during their Elective rotation year in Medical School, and Graduate with a Doctor of Dental Medicine and Master of Public Health dual degrees simultaneously.
The program is designed to provide graduates with the clinical and research skills required to approach health problems from a population and prevention perspective by integrating the roles of the biological sciences and clinical practice into the broader sets of knowledge and practices used in public health.
We will graduate Dentists who are provided the academic knowledge and skills, as well as the clinical experience to improve the health of all populations, especially those most vulnerable and underserved.
Only Students that registered for the DMD/MPH course will be awarded the dual degrees upon graduation.
