DEPARTMENT OF MEDICAL GENETICS

The Department of Medical Genetics at the Cook College of Medical Geneticists of the James Cook School of Medicine is a multidisciplinary unit for research, undergraduate and postgraduate medical education in the broad areas of Medical Genetics.

The department of medical genetics was founded in 2008, Our department consists of faculty members, clinical fellows and residents.

Given a growing appreciation of the foundational sciences as a defining requirement of sound physician practice, especially in an age of genomic medicine, our education mission to provide Clinical Fellows, Residents and Students with an education in Medical Genetics that is based on an understanding of Clinical biochemistry, physiology and molecular/cell biology.

The featured courses include CMG (The integrated teaching program of Cell Biology, Molecular Biology and Genetics in Medicine), Genetics in Medicine, Cell biology and Genomics.

As an Alumni in the Medical Genetics Vocational/Specialist Trainee Program at James Cook School of Medicine, you will have an exceptional opportunity to engage in several fellowship programs that provide integrated, cross-disciplinary training in the molecular and cellular aspects of medical genetics, coupled with in-depth research experience.

Our programs embrace a broad range of research interests and offer great flexibility in options for study and research, current main research directions within the department include heavy metal caused seminal toxicity, abnormal epigenetic modifications and tumorigenesis, bioinformatics based none-coding RNA analysis in cancer, identification of key factors for sex determination and molecular diagnosis of pedigree.

The research programs are designed to enable you to pursue your individual interests while ensuring that you receive rigorous training in areas central to your discipline.

The department maintains a robust extramurally supported training environment.

In the Medical Genetics cluster, the faculty research labs comprise an innovative and dynamic research environment. Our significant resources, enabled in part by our association with the JCSM's Medical Research Center for Medical Genetics , assure access to the broad range of instruments used in modern Medical\biological research. For example, we have core facilities for bionformatic analysis, peptide analysis, protein purification, biophysical analysis, animal research and confocal, electron ,and super-resolution microscopy.

Shared research facilities are readily available for computer graphics, protein and nucleic acid chemistry, fluorescence-activated cell sorting. Cluster-wide seminars, colloquia, journal clubs, provide numerous opportunities for hearing about the latest research in Medical Genetics, for students to present their own work, and for developing broad interactions and collaborations among students and faculty.

COOK COLLEGE OF EMBRYOLOGISTS (CE - CK)

Welcome to the Cook College of Embryologists, Explore all our Vocational / Specialist Trainee & Clinical Fellowship Programs. Learn about our Department within the College

DEPARTMENT OF CLINICAL EMBRYOLOGY & REPRODUCTIVE MEDICINE

James Cook School of Medicine was the first to establish clinical embryology sub speciality n Oceania in 2005, at the Cook College of Embryologists aiming to provide thorough academic training, research experience, ethics and skills related to human preimplantation embryology and infertility.

To strengthen the research culture in ART, the department has also started doctoral training in 2007.

Approximately one in eight couples experience some form of infertility, making it one of the most common medical problems in their reproductive age.

Though advancements have been made both in clinical and laboratory aspects of Assisted Reproductive Technology (ART), there still are grey areas that need further research to improve the quality of outcome.

Further, the country needs competent clinical embryologists to provide quality treatment in an ethical manner.

Hence the primary focus of the department is capacity building through academic programmes to produce competent human resources to take up employment in both clinical ART and research stream, thereby enhancing the visibility of this specialised area of science.

The Department of Clinical Embryology & Reproductive Medicine is one of the top centres in the Country for advanced training and research in the field of embryology.

The clinical wing of the department treats approximately ten thousand infertile patients every year and offers all modern ART techniques including preimplantation genetic testing and fertility preservation in cancer-affected individuals.
