DEPARTMENT OF PAEDIATRICS & CHILD HEALTH
Welcome to the Department of Paediatrics and Child Health at the Cook College of Paediatrics and Child Health of the James Cook School of Medicine, one of the largest departments in the School of Medicine.
Our members provide clinical care, and drive innovation in health professional education, research, and clinical practice. We focus on the critical, early phase of the lifespan: conception to young adulthood.
Our mission is to optimize the health and wellbeing of children and to support families allowing every child to achieve their full potential. Members of the Department of Paediatrics are based at our various Affiliate hospitals, with associates throughout the community.
With more than 190 members across 14 divisions, clinical services span the full range of pediatric subspecialties and complex general paediatric care.
Experts in patient safety and quality improvement contribute to the smooth operations of our clinical programs; this expertise continues to grow. Education is a strength of the department.
Our members contribute to training Clinical Fellows, Specialist Trainees (Residents) and teaching medical students throughout the core curriculum.
The undergraduate curriculum in Paediatrics is consistently among the highest rated in the Country. We offer Specialist trainee programs (Residency) in general paediatrics and Clinical Fellowship programs in paediatric subspecialties. We
also lead and participate in the training of paediatric nurse practitioners.
Members of the department supervise Postgraduate students through partnerships with the Department of Preventive & Public Health Medicine Division of Epidemiology, Biostatistics, Occupational Health and Experimental Medicine, and other graduate training programs at JCSM
Excellence in clinical care and education is fuelled by a strong commitment to high quality research. Fundamental, clinical, and translational research is carried out by our members at the Centre for Translational Biology (CTB), the Centre for Innovative Medicine (CIM), the Centre for Outcomes Research and Evaluation (CORE), the hospital, the community, and around the world.
Research focusing on improving medical education is also carried out in our department. Investigators in the Department of Pediatrics are well-funded by the Government and other major funding agencies.
The advocacy mission of the department is a growing and important area of activity in which we expect significant expansion in the coming years.
With guidance from Indigenous families and leaders, we hope to extend our longstanding efforts to improve care in Cook Islands. Work to improve social inequities both locally and globally is ongoing through several innovative programs in the fields of social pediatrics and global health.
Clinical care, education, and research are equally valued and interact synergistically to guide us on our path to realizing our mission.

COOK COLLEGE OF PSYCHIATRISTS - (CPsych. CK)
Welcome to the Cook College of Psychiatrists, Explore all our Vocational / Specialist Trainee & Clinical Fellowship Programs. Learn about our Departments within the College.
DEPARTMENT OF PSYCHIATRY & PSYCHOLOGY
The Department of Psychiatry and Psychology of the Cook College of Psychiatrist has a tripartite mission of Clinical, Education, and Research agendas, serving our surrounding community and the Cook Islands, and providing expertise at a national and international level.
We are staffed with 85 full-time and 30 part-time faculty, and provide a robust array of evidenced-based services both locally at the James Cook School of Medicine affiliated hospitals and remotely to the entire JCSM community.
Our Educational programs are dedicated to training the next generation of psychiatrists, physicians, scientists, and psychologists through our nationally competitive Vocational/Specialist Trainee Programs (Adult Residency Training Program), Clinical Fellowship programs (Addictions Psychiatry and Addictions Medicine, Consultation/Liaison, Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, and Forensic Psychiatry), and a Psychology internship program.
The Physician Scientist Training Program within the Adult program recruits MD/PhD candidates to generate Physician Researchers within the field.
The Department is a leading clinical department within the Cook College of Psychiatrists and the Cook College of Clinical Psychologists of the James Cook School of Medicine.
Through the integration of our basic science work with our T1 translational research, we are positioned to take advantage of new discoveries and developments in genetics, neuromodulation, neuroimaging, and molecular biology and chemistry.
Additional top priorities for our Faculty and staff include a Department-wide Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion program and our newly implemented Faculty Mentorship and Development program. Take advantage of our prime location
Our prime location provides us with direct access to our community for impactful, hands-on research and patient care. We are located within the heart of Rarotonga City and are within easy travel distance to other parts of Cook Islands for work or pleasure.
We are a key player in Rarotonga, and educate state leaders and provide cutting-edge program evaluations to the state.
We welcome you to explore our website to learn more about our Department and the exciting opportunities available.
