Welcome to Student Affairs at the James Cook School of Medicine

Our team of approximately 150 staff, faculty and students plays a vital role in advancing JCSM’s learning mission. 

Core to our

student-centered practice is a commitment to meet learners where they are, to support students in experiencing a sense of well-being, agency and belonging, and to offer an environment where all students are encouraged to be true to themselves, to dream big, and to achieve their highest potential.

Student Affairs staff are change-makers. We influence change that has a direct and transformative impact on students, campus culture, and the learning environment. 

We hold a special obligation to ensure that barriers to engagement in academic and campus life are identified, addressed, and dismantled. 

Our focus is students. We recognize that there is not one homogenous student experience. 

The work that we do is informed by, honours and reflects the diversity of our learners, the intersection of their identities, and their lived experiences. 

We are fiercely committed to facilitating personalized learning experiences so that students can optimize their time here.

And we measure our success. Through regular assessment we demonstrate the impact that we make, calibrate our approaches to best address student needs, remain attuned to the changing expectations of the students we serve, and strive to maintain our position as leaders in Student Affairs practice and in our respective areas of expertise.

A number of housing options are available to students, and JCSM maintains an updated listing of options. 

Initial coordination of student housing arrangements can be made by the University in residences located within 5-mile radius of the campus that provide single or double occupancy room and apartment or flat. 

With the guidance of university’s Accommodation Officer, students are usually able to settle in and live comfortably on Campus.

Our clinical partnerships are essential to providing quality care throughout the region and training the physicians and specialists who will continue excellent care for future generations. 

As an academic medical provider, we partner with hospitals and health care centers where the Consultants of our several Cook Colleges and Physicians/Surgeons of the James Cook School of Medicine faculty care for patients and train medical students, residents and fellows. 

Many of our partners – including the Safe Haven Hospital and St. John's Children’s Hospital – are located on the James Cook School of Medicine Medical Campus though our physicians see patients at locations across the Rarotonga regions and internationally. 

In addition to our hospital partners, our corporate partners include Havilland Beck Holdings, a consortium of healthcare providers that includes several of our teaching hospitals.

SAFE HAVEN HOSPITAL

The largest hospital on JCSM International Medical Campus, Safe Haven Hospital provides extensive clinical experience for medical students and trainees. The hospital has been ranked in the World Report honor roll of the nation’s best hospitals since 2008. JCSM faculty physicians make up the hospital’s medical staff. 

ST. JOHN'S CHILDREN’S HOSPITAL

St. John's Children’s Hospital provides a full range of services for children and their families across the region and around the world. Recognized as one of the country’s top children’s hospitals, it is the region’s only children’s hospital ranked in all 10 pediatric specialties. St. John's Children’s Hospital is staffed exclusively by the JCSM Faculty .

COOK'S SURGICAL & CANCER CENTER

The James Cook School of Medicine scientists and physicians care for newly diagnosed cancer patients each year at the Cook Surgical and cancer center within the Cook College of Surgeons

JAMES COOK MEDICAL CENTER

The medical staff at the James Cook Medical Center is a mix of JCSM Physicians/Surgeons, Havilland Beck Physicians/Surgeons and private-practice physicians. 

JCSM physicians staff the hospital’s emergency room and hospitalist service and provide pediatric outpatient services in association with St. John's Children’s Hospital. 

THE COOK MEDICAL BONE & REHABILITATION CENTER

The Cook Medical and bone center provides a full range of inpatient, outpatient and community rehabilitation services supported by a collaboration with the School of Medicine. 

In addition general services, The center has specialized inpatient programs for stroke, brain injury, amputee and spinal cord patients.

ST. AUGUSTINE SURGICAL CENTER

Staffed largely by JCSM physicians, St. Augustine Surgical Center provides all Surgical Care to patients regardless of the families’ ability to pay.
